FAIR TRADE ORGANIZATIONS
- Fair trade organizations were created to improve the lives of disadvantaged people in developing countries and to change unfair structures of international trade.
- The two main fair trade organizations are International fair Trade Association (IFAT) and the Fair Trade Federation (FTF).
- Fair Trade organizations seek to ensure that the basic principles of fair trade are being observed in the workshops and farms.
PRINCIPLES OF FAIR TRADE
- The artisan or farmer is treated with respect and receives a fair wage based on local economic conditions.
- The materials and processes used do not threaten the local environment.
- Children are not exploited or kept from school to help in family or village workshops or farms.
- Services are provided to the producers to assist in product design, marketing, packing and shipping, as well as developing business and financial skills.
- Long-term relations are built so that producers can rely on a steady income.
FAIR TRADE PRODUCT SOURCES
One World Goods is a local, independent fair trade gift shop. We do not travel around the world to purchase goods or monitor fair trade practices. Instead, we rely on larger fair trade importers who have the organization in place to give the necessary guidance to the artisans and are able to monitor fair trade practices in workshops and farms around the world. Listed below are the vendors who are One World Goods' current partners in its mission. Visit the web sites of the ones highlighted.
